WORK STARTS ON DOWNTOWN POST OFFICE

Preliminary work began Friday on remodeling for a new downtown Roanoke branch post office.

The 5,700-square-foot space at Church Avenue and First Street Southwest formerly was occupied by Dominion Bank. The space - on the ground floor of a municipal parking garage - has been vacant for more than a year, since Dominion's predecessor, First Union National Bank of Virginia, closed the operation.

Joe Christenbury, spokesman for Acorn Construction Ltd. of Troutville and contractor for the remodeling, said interior demolition work will take two to three weeks. That will be followed by construction of the new branch. He said he received the notice to proceed with the work Thursday.

Acorn purchased a building permit from Roanoke's municipal building office for the work it valued at $264,000.

Lewis Nash, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service at Greensboro, N.C., declined to disclose the amount the government is paying but said the money involved is "substantial."

Nash said the remodeling will include installing post office boxes.

The building will have a retail store format, Nash said. In addition to handling the regular mail, he said, there will be counter space for selling collector stamps, collectors' items and post office memorabilia.

The target date for opening the new branch is Dec. 1, although that date is not firm, Nash said.

The new branch will replace the postal station on the ground floor of the Poff Federal Building and is part of a relocation of offices for several federal agecies operating in Roanoke.

Edwin C. Hall and Stuart Meredith were leasing agents for the new space.
