ELECTED SCHOOL BOARD WON'T BE ON CITY BALLOT

Roanoke voters will not have the opportunity this year to decide whether the city will have an elected School Board.

The leaders of a petition drive to get the issue on the ballot in November did not submit the signatures to the Circuit Court clerk's office because they did not have the required 10 percent of registered voters.

The signatures were due for submission to the clerk at least 90 days before the Nov.8 election. The deadline was Wednesday.

"It's dead for this year, but they can start again next year," said Bert Crush, Circuit Court clerk.

Gloria Stinnett, who headed the petition campaign, said the drive failed because some people who had promised to collect signatures lost interest and dropped out.

Salem will have a referendum in November to decide whether to switch to an elected board.

Roanoke County already has voted for an elected board and will elect three members in November.
