GILBERT W. McGEORGE JR. has joined Fuel Oil and Equipment Co. Inc. as vice president and chief financial officer. A certified public accountant, he is a former partner with KPMG Peat Marwick, where he was employed for 21 years. He is past president of the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce Backbone Club and a former member of the boards of the Roanoke Valley and Greensboro, N.C., Chambers of Commerce.
ACCOUNTING
T. DOUGLAS McQUADE has been named managing partner of KPMG Peat Marwick's Roanoke office. McQuade joined the accounting and consulting firm in 1977 and specializes in providing services to manufacturing, retailing and tax-exempt clients. He is on the board of the Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia Society of CPAs. Also at the firm, TRACY L. GIBBS and STEVEN C. CORNWELL have been promoted to the position of manager. Both certified public accountants, Gibbs joined the firm in 1989 and Cornwell in 1990.
BANKING
EDWIN P. HUNTER has been promoted to vice president of private banking at First Union National Bank of Virginia. Hunter joined the bank in 1981 as a management trainee and was manager of the Hollins and Salem offices before joining the commercial banking group in 1991.
ELIZABETH H. HASKELL of Martinsville has been named to Crestar Bank's Martinsville area advisory board. Haskell is a director of the Martinsville Bulletin newspaper, was secretary of natural resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1990 to 1994 and was on Virginia's State Air Pollution Control Board from 1973 to 1989, acting as chairwoman the last six years. She also is a director of Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's home near Lynchburg, and previously was a director of Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology.
COLLEGES
EDWARD R. WHITSON has been appointed associate dean for academic affairs at Roanoke College in Salem. Before joining the Roanoke College administration, he was associate dean of the college and acting director of continuing education at the State University of New York at Geneseo. Also at Roanoke College, DENISE SMYTHE DOZ has been named director of international programs. Doz, a native of South Africa, was director of residence at Havergal College in Toronto before coming to Roanoke College.
W. RODNEY OWEN has been appointed Teletechnet site director at Virginia Western Community College. He will be responsible for overseeing a program in which courses in engineering technology will be available at VWCC in partnership with Old Dominion University via interactive broadcasts transmitted live by satellite.
EDUCATION
CRAIG BALZER and WITHERS BURRESS have been elected to the board of The Achievement Center, a Roanoke school for children with learning disabilities. Balzer is executive vice president of Balzer and Associates, and Burress is senior vice president and regional executive with Signet Bank.
LAW
TAMMY LYNNE MOSS has joined The Center for Employment Law, a Roanoke law firm specializing in human resource, labor and personnel cases. Moss was formerly a law clerk for the Virginia Supreme Court in Richmond. She is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Labor and Employment sections of the Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
MANUFACTURING
JAMES J. BATCHLER has been appointed manager of human resources for General Electric's Industrial Systems and Services Division in Salem effective Aug. 29. Batchler now is manager of human resources for GE Aircraft Engines' Centers of Excellence. He previously was human resource manager for the Engine Overhaul Department, and later for the Aircraft Engines' Component Manufacturing Operation.
NONPROFITS
LaDONNA HEARN has been appointed outreach child care worker for the Martinsville area for Centers For Families That Work, a component of the Council of Community Services based in Roanoke.
TOURISM
C. HOLT MALONEY, director of marketing and public relations at Luray Caverns in Luray, will retire at the end of the year. He has been with Luray Caverns for 26 years and for the past eight years has headed the marketing, public relations and sales departments. After his retirement, he will remain on the board of directors and will be a consultant.
