Horse course

WYTHEVILLE - A popular horseback riding course again will be offered by Wytheville Community College this fall starting Aug. 23. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. on the main campus.

The other classes will be taught at Copper Crest Farm, which offers an indoor riding arena for bad weather and also an outdoor arena and riding trails.

Pam Umberger is the instructor. She teaches basic horsemanship, including riding position, horse care and training techniques. Horses are available for all riding levels from beginning to advanced, with riding activities designed to match those levels.

People interested in taking the one-credit physical education course should report to Carroll Hall (Room 219) for the first session. Tuition and fees are $45.80, plus a stable fee.

Additional information is available by calling Dan Jones at 228-5541, extension 235, or toll-free 1-800-468-1195 from outside Wythe County.

Scholar speaks

WYTHEVILLE - A German scholar whose research includes the early Wythe County Lutheran pastor George Daniel Flohr will be the speaker at the annual Saint John Day homecoming service at 11 a.m. on Aug. 21.

Saint John Lutheran Church was the mother church for a number of Wythe County Lutheran congregations, all of whom return for the service at the old church once a year. Saint John merged with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in 1924, in an agreement that included holding the annual homecoming service on the third Sunday of each August.

Robert A. Selig, born in Winterhausen, Germany, and now a U.S. citizen, is the author of two books and more than 25 articles and commissioned papers published in historical and professional journals.

While doing research on the Hessian involvement during the American Revolution, he discovered a manuscript by Flohr, which he now is preparing for publication. The manuscript is Flohr's recollection of his experiences in New England and Virginia during the Revolutionary War.

Selig's current work involves research into the connection between Flohr the soldier and Pastor Flohr of old Saint John Church. As it became apparent that they were the same person, Selig has written a number of articles on his findings.

In addition to his address at the homecoming service, Selig will make a two-hour presentation on Father Flohr from 10 a.m. to noon at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 405 W. Main St. in Wytheville.

The service is followed by a picnic on the church grounds with each participant bringing food. Saint John is on U.S. 21-52 off Interstate 81, exit 70.

Singer returns

WYTHEVILLE - Blacksburg singer Catherine Breske will perform a return engagement Aug. 25 at a concert to raise money for a five-county domestic violence program with headquarters in Wytheville.

Last summer, she gave a concert in Wytheville that helped raise $5,000 for the Family Resource Center, with the help of a matching grant from GIV Corp. in Bastian. Breske's performance includes Broadway show tunes, pop standards and light jazz.

The fund-raiser in the Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park will have the theme of an ice cream social. Box suppers are being provided by the Wytheville Holiday Inn, beverages by Kwik Kafe Co. Inc. and a variety of ice cream flavors by Premier Bank.

Chicken or ham biscuit suppers will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. The featured performance, co-sponsored by Wythe County Community Hospital and Dr. William R. Deal, will start at 8 p.m.

Admission is limited to advance tickets, available by calling 228-8431, from Wordsprint Inc. at its new Spring Street location, or from Family Resource Center board members and volunteers associated with the fund-raiser.

Tickets are $12.50 each. Proceeds will benefit the center's new shelter, which serves the counties of Wythe, Bland, Smyth, Carroll and Grayson and the city of Galax.
