OPPORTUNITY ABOUNDS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

Following are some of the colleges and universities in the Roanoke area:

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA ROANOKE CENTER: Part of the University's Division of Continuing Education, the center is now in its 67th year in Roanoke, serving more than 2,500 citizens from the Roanoke region annually. It provides master's degrees, teacher re-licensure courses, professional development seminars, and customized training for organizations. Tuition for Virginia residents is $137, $179 for masters programs, and $183 for engineering masters programs (per semester hour). Non-credit tuition varies by program. ROANOKE COLLEGE: Downtown Salem. Private, Lutheran church-related, liberal arts, coeducational. Offers bachelor of science, bachelor of arts and bachelor of business administration degrees. Enrollment is 1,650, mostly full time. Tuition, room and board are $17,850; part time is $750 per course. Phone: 375-2270.

VIRGINIA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE: 3095 Colonial Ave., S.W., Roanoke, part of the state's public system of 23 two-year colleges, offers associate and professional/technical degree programs. Shorter-term certificates also are available to upgrade or learn new job skills. Bachelor's degree in social work from Radford University and bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering technology from Old Dominion University available on VWCC campus. Tuition for Va. residents is $45.30 per credit hour, $149 for others. Enrollment is more than 7,400. Phone: 857-7231.

HOLLINS COLLEGE: North of Roanoke on U.S. 11, is a private, liberal arts college for women. Offers 25 majors and study abroad on four continents. Offers master's degree programs for men and women. Enrollment is a little more than 1,000, mostly full time. Tuition, room and board are $18,985; master of arts in liberal studies is $567 per course; the master of arts programs in creative writing is $13,470 for one year of intensive study (actual costs for this program are nominal and students accepted receive a waiver of the tuition fee); summer graduate program in children's literature is $2,500. VIRGINIA TECH: in Blacksburg, about 35 miles west of Roanoke, is a coeducational, state-supported comprehensive research university offering bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Enrollment is about 23,000, mostly full time. Annual tuition and mandatory fees for Virginia residents are $3,951; others $10,404; tuition and fees for graduate programs are $4,557 for Virginia residents, $6,726 for others. Part-time tuition for Va. residents is $141.63 per credit hour, $410.50 for others; part-time graduate tuition is $222.50 per semester hour for Virginia residents, $343 for others. FERRUM COLLEGE: In Ferrum, about 35 miles south of Roanoke on Virginia 40 West, is a private, United Methodist Church-affiliated, liberal arts, coeducational institution. Enrollment is about 1,100, mostly full time. Tuition, room and board for resident students are $13,600; tuition for commuters is $9,400. RADFORD UNIVERSITY: About 40 miles west of Roanoke, is state-supported and coeducational. It offers bachelor's and master's degree programs. Enrollment is about 9,450, mostly full time. Tuition, room and board for Virginia residents are $7,244; others $11,416. Full-time graduate tuition and fees for Va. residents are $3,186; $6,060 for others. Part-time tuition for undergraduates is $127 per semester hour for Va. residents; $299 for others. Part-time graduate tuition for Va. residents is $133 per semester hour; $252 for others. ROANOKE VALLEY GRADUATE CENTER: 117 Church Ave. SW in downtown Roanoke. Graduate courses offered by five institutions, including Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Radford University, Old Dominion University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Programs offered include: master of arts in counseling education (Tech); master of business administration (Tech and Radford); master of engineering (Tech, UVa, ODU, VCU); master of science in adult/continuing education (Tech); master of education in instruction (UVa); master of science in educational leadership (Radford); and master of criminal justice (Radford).

Teacher recertification courses are available through UVa and Radford. Professional and personal development seminars and conferences are available in numerous areas through institutions that are part of the graduate center. Tuition rates vary by institution. Phone: (703) 857-7292.

MARY BALDWIN COLLEGE: Staunton, offers a bachelor of arts degree to men and women through its adult degree program at its Roanoke center. Majors include business administration, communications, health care administration, English, history, psychology, and sociology. Teacher licensure is also available. Evening and weekend classes are held at the Roanoke center or course offerings on independent basis are also available. Tuition is $250 per semester hour. NATIONAL BUSINESS COLLEGE: 1813 E. Main St., Salem, is a proprietary, accredited career college that offers diploma and associate degrees and four-year programs in a variety of fields. Features a medical assisting curriculum and bachelor of business administration degrees in management and accounting. Enrollment is about 1,500. Tuition is $109 per credit hour. Phone: 986-1800.

ECPI COMPUTER INSTITUTE: 1030 S. Jefferson St., Roanoke, is a proprietary accredited career college offering courses of study in medical computer specialist technology, biomedical equipment electronics technology, an associate in applied science program in computer electronics technology, accounting and office administration and medical computer administration. VIRGINIA COLLEGE: 2163 Apperson Dr., Salem, is a proprietary computer school offering two-year degree, diploma and certificate programs. Enrollment is about 132. Tuition is $400 per course. Phone: 776-0755.

DOMINION BUSINESS SCHOOL: 4142-1 Melrose Ave., N.W., Roanoke, is a proprietary school offering programs in accounting, business management and other business, paralegal, and medical fields. Enrollment is 200, mostly full time. Phone: 362-7738 or 1-800-372-7738.

ROANOKE MEMORIAL HOSPITALS: Belleview and Jefferson streets, nonprofit, offers one- and two-year diploma and certificate programs in five medical fields. The programs and phone numbers are: practical nursing (981-7362), radiologic technology (981-7731), radiation oncology technology (981-7042), nuclear medicine technology (981-7274) and medical technology (981-7881). Enrollment is limited, ranging from three to 45, depending on the program. Tuition varies but the range is about $300 to $600.

THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES: Sponsored by Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley, 920 S. Jefferson St., mailing address P.O. Box 13186, Roanoke, 24031-3186, is nonprofit and offers two-year associate degree programs in nursing, respiratory care, emergency health sciences-paramedic, physical therapist assistant, occupational therapy assistant and health information management (medical records) and certificate programs in phlebotomy, health services management and physician practice management. A career-mobility program is offered for licensed practical nurses. A residence hall is available at $625 per semester; $450 for summer session. Cost to attend for one academic year is approximately $4,470 for tuition and room. Tuition per credit hour is $130. Financial aid available for qualified students.
