Johnson, 12, swam the 400 in 4 minutes, 44.43 seconds, a time that makes her eligible for National Age Group top 16 consideration. Brittany Semones, 10, of Roanoke was fifth in the individual medley (2:52.68) and swam on the 400 freestyle relay team that finished seventh. Roanoke's Trent Johnson, 14, was 11th in the 100 freestyle (:58.50) and was a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that placed second.
Roanoke ended the weekend meet with 9991/2 points to finish ahead of second-place Middle Atlantic's 943. Allegheny Mountain was third with 8441/2, Maryland had 729, and Connecticut's 6041/2 rounded out the top five.
nK.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke on Saturday advanced to the consolation bracket championship at the USTA Boys 14 National Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
Hippensteel, who was eliminated from the singles draw Friday, won twice on Saturday, beating Nicholas Boeker of Miami 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Jamie Sahara of San Marino, Calif., 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal round. He plays David Martin of Tulsa, Okla., at 9:30 a.m. (EST) today for fifth place in the tournament. Martin, the tournament's top seed, and Hippensteel, the No. 2 seed, each lost on Friday.
Martin, Hippensteel and Phillip Nguyen - with whom Hippensteel won the USTA doubles championship on Friday - are the three players who will represent the United States at the NTT Junior Team Tennis tournament Aug. 24-28 in Yamanakako, Japan.
Fifth-seeded Andrew Park of San Marino, Calif., won the USTA Boys 14 singles championship Saturday by beating Atlanta's Jamal Parker 6-2, 6-1. Third place went to Prakash Venkataraman of Sugar Land, Texas, who beat Ashley Fickel of Santa Barbara, Calif., 6-1, 7-6. Venkataraman also received the John Newcombe-Owen Davidson Center Court Sportsmanship Award.
