Hippensteel, the second seed, beat top-seeded David Martin of Tulsa, Okla., 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
The match ended a remarkable summer on American soil for Hippensteel, who travels to Japan this month as part of a select U.S. team. Hippensteel won the doubles championship in San Antonio, and in four national tournaments - including the USTA 14-and-under Clay Courts, the Easter Bowl and the NationsBank Spring Fling - his singles losses were to the eventual champion in each, once in the final, twice in the semifinals and once in a quarterfinal. He never lost a consolation-bracket match.
