TECH WOMEN PLAYING IN SAN JUAN SHOOTOUT

Virginia Tech's women's basketball team will open play in the second annual San Juan Shootout against Michigan State in a first-round game on Dec.19 at 2 p.m. The Hokies will be the No.3 seed in San Juan. Michigan State will be the sixth seed.

Texas Tech, the 1993 national champion, is the top seed and will play eighth-seeded Florida State in the first round. In other opening-round matchups, fourth-seeded Southern Illinois plays No.5 Old Dominion, and second-seeded Oklahoma State plays No.7 Detroit.

Tech returns 10 letterwinners and four senior starters from a team that played in the 1994 NCAA Tournament, including forward Christi Osborne, who led Tech in scoring with a 14.5 average. All-Metro Conference center Jenny Root also returns after ranking among league leaders in five statistical categories as a junior last season.
