BARTON, Lilburn Eugene, (``Gene''), 59, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 1994, at the VA Medical Center, after an illness with cancer. He was born December 3, 1934, in Fincastle, Va., a son of the late Marvin Randolph and Love Myrtle Crouch Barton. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He retired from the Roanoke City Sheriff's Department and was a decorated helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and a member of the Roanoke BPO Elks Lodge #197. He is survived by his wife, Freda; daughters, Derritheia Barton, Roanoke, Mrs. Dennis (``Vicky'') Minnix, Goodview, Mrs. Michael (``Susan'') Loyd, Salem; sons, Phillip and wife, Barbara, Brian and wife, Sondra, Randy and wife, Kay, and Christopher, all of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Christopher Ayers, Nathan and Jessica Minnix, Ashleigh Loyd, Aubrey Mara Barton. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 1994, with the Rev. Daniel Crandall officiating. Interment will be in Godwin Cemetery, Fincastle. Pallbearers will be Leon Bradford, Steve Southerland, Gary Hurt, Allen McDaniels, Samuel Clay, Felix Morgan and Lee Hall. BEARD, Viola Mason, 84, of Stuart, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, died Sunday, August 14, 1994. She was a long time member of Belmont Baptist Church. She taught in Roanoke County and Botetourt County Public Schools for 24 years. She was the oldest child of Harry and Bessie Mason and was the widow of Floyd Lingle Beard. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Lingle Beard, Richmond; daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Alan Callender, Stuart, Fla.; grandchildren, Andrew Floyd and Sarah Evelyn Callender; sister, Margaret M. Watts, Roanoke; brother, Walter E. Mason, Lexington. She was preceded in death by a brother, Woodrow S. Mason. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 18, at Evergreen Burial Park. BRINKLEY, William Gregory, 44, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, August 16, 1994, at his home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Brinkley. He was an army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. Surviving are his wife, Karen N. Brinkley; daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Brinkley; two stepchildren, James Nelson and Delaney Noojin; his father, Watson Graham Brinkley; two sisters, Suzanne P. Brinkley, Rosemary Hambrick all of Roanoke; two brothers, David A. Brinkley, Minneapolis, Minn., Thomas M. Brinkley, Torrance, Calif.; three nieces and one nephew. Funeral mass will be at St. Andrew's Catholic Church 11:15 a.m. Thursday, with Rev. Steven R. Rule officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. BRYANT, Harold Paul, 74, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, August 16, 1994, in Stonewall Jackson Extended Care Facility. Born in West Virginia on February 29, 1920, he was the son of the late Cosby Allen Bryant and Grace Ryling Bryant. He was a retired Railroad Agent. Mr. Bryant was an active member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church for many years. During his membership, he was a trustee, a deacon, served as church clerk, taught the Men's Bible Class from 1984 to 1993, as well as serving on various committees within the church. He was a leading force behind the Radio Ministry which brought the Men's Bible Class Sunday School lesson across the airwaves each Sunday morning, so those listening at home or traveling in their cars might hear God's word. He is survived by his wife, Gladys W. ``Tooty"" Bryant, Buena Vista; a sister, Lucille Blankenship, Hinton, W.Va. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 18 at the Buena Vista Baptist Church with Dr. Chip Pendleton officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lomax Funeral Home.

FRAZIER, Juanita Dallas, (``Nita""), 64, of 2313 Marsh Street, Lynchburg, died Monday, August 15, 1994, in Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg. She was the wife of Wayne C. Frazier. Born in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Jefferson and Hontas Wells Dallas. She was retired from Courtland Manufacturing with 25 years of service and was a member of Union Christian Church in Madison Heights. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Kitty D. Hollifield, Lynchburg; Patsy D. Setliff, Danville; three nieces. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Donald Weaver. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. HEWITT, Pastor A. Kenneth Jr., 68, of Manassas, died suddenly, Sunday, August 14, 1994, at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond. Rev. Hewitt retired in December 1992 as Pastor of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manassas after 27 years of service. He came to Manassas in 1965 from Summer Memorial Lutheran Church, Newberry, S. C., and previously served Daniel's Lutheran Church, Lincolnton, N.C., and was organizing pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Durham, N.C. A product of Lutheran parsonage, Pastor Hewitt's father served Lutheran congregations and causes in North and South Carolina and Southwest Virginia. Pastor Hewitt was graduated from Rural Retreat High School in Va., attended Roanoke College in Salem and was graduated from Newberry College, Newberry, S.C. He was in the 1956 graduating class from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C. Pastor Hewitt was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. A. Kenneth Hewitt, Sr. and Jane Womble Dixon Hewitt and one sister, Jane Waters. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Hewitt; three children, Ken Hewitt III, Atlanta, Ga., Owen Hewitt and Lisa Mayo, both of Virginia Beach; four step-children, Gretchen Voss, Steve Pedersen, Rachel Martin and Christopher Martin, all of Manassas; and one sister, Sara Reidenbach, Columbia, S.C. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Alicia Hewitt, Cherie Cable, Brittany Hewitt, Andrew Hewitt, Jason Mayo and Hunter Mayo; two great grandchildren and his previous wife, Helena Waters Hewitt, Chesapeake. PHELPS, Robert Lee, 65, of Roanoke County, died Monday, August 15, 1994. Mr. Phelps was born April 10, 1929, in North Carolina to Harry S. Phelps and Stella Woodley Phelps. He retired in 1989 from Packard Electric Division of General Motors, Warren, Ohio, where he had worked as an engineer for 33 years. Mr. Phelps was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke, where he served on the Board of Deacons. Surviving are his wife, Betty Bowen Phelps; one son, Mark Phelps, Roanoke; one daughter, Suzanne Koehler, Mishawaka, Ind.; one brother, Harry S. Phelps Jr., and one sister, Alice Kelly, both of Plymouth, N.C.; two grandchildren also survive. A memorial service will be conducted at Calvary Baptist Church, Roanoke, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, August 20, with the Rev. James V. DeFoe officiating. STEVENS, Hilder May Roberts Hall, 83, of Bedford, passed away, Tuesday, August 16, 1994, at her home after a lengthy illness and went home to be with the Lord. She was born September 11, 1911, in Tacoma, Washington, a daughter of the late James Harvey Roberts and Sarah Elizabeth Kennedy Roberts. She was preceded in death by her husbands; three sons; three stepsons; three brothers. She was an active m ember of the First Free-Will Baptist Church of Bedford. She is survived by two daughters, Nadine S. Ponting and her husband, Jim of Strongsville, Ohio, Alice E. Smith and her husband, Herbert of Roanoke; one son, Harry Eugene Stevens and wife, Frances of Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Frances Stevens, Moneta; two stepdaughters, Vera Randolph, Roanoke, Mary Roberts, Blue Ridge; three stepsons, John W. Stevens, Haywood Stevens, both of Moneta, George Stevens, Roanoke; eight grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
