$100,000 BOND SET IN SLAYING

The Roanoke man charged in the weekend killing of a Fairfax woman at a church camp is being held in Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville in lieu of $100,000 bond, the Buckingham County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

According to state police, Paul W. Ragland, 42, was arrested without incident about 11 a.m. Sunday at the home of his brother in Portsmouth after the Sheriff's Office told state police where he was.

Ragland has been charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Marcia L. Summers, 40, who was shot Sunday morning at the Nazarene Camp on Virginia 690 near Dillwyn.

Sheriff's Deputy Roger Jamerson said Ragland and Summers were attending the camp at the time of the shooting. A motive has not been determined, he said.

The Rev. Earl Robertson of First Church of the Nazarene in Roanoke said Sunday was the last day of "Family Week" at the camp.

He said Ragland had attended his church sporadically in the past year; the last time was on Easter Sunday. But based on his knowledge of Ragland from church, Robertson said, a crime like this would not be characteristic of him.

Robertson said he was aware that Ragland and Summers knew each other, but couldn't say for certain the nature of their relationship. He said Ragland was divorced and unemployed. Ragland's most recent job had been in the tool room at Magic City Ford in Roanoke, Robertson said.

Robertson said he believes whatever happened had nothing to do with the camp or the Church of the Nazarene.

A preliminary court appearance is pending, Jamerson said.
