"I think she was one of the most courageous people I've ever known," said Phyllis Bishop, associate superintendent for the Pulaski County schools.
"She was a very good teacher. She always had the interest of her students foremost in her mind. Even after she had been diagnosed and knew she was very seriously ill, she never let that interfere with her teaching responsibility until the very last," Bishop said. Roberts finally took a leave of absence from her teaching before the beginning of the past school year, Bishop said.
A graduate of Ferrum College and Radford University, Roberts was a member of the First Baptist Church.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Burton, the Rev. Kent Taylor and the Rev. Mariel Myers. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery in Locust Grove.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Carole R. Roberts and Emily J. Roberts, both of Radford; her parents, Fred and Stanley-Bea Harmon of Roanoke County; her grandmother, Audrey Lawrence of Check; a sister; and a brother.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church Prayer Ministry, the New River Valley Hospice or the First Baptist Church World Hunger Fund.
