THE CLEAREST OF ALL? FIRST UNION

Clarity? In an annual report? Impossible, you say.

Well, take a look at the three-time champ of clear and concise annual reports - First Union Corp.

First Union's 1993 annual report has been honored as best in the banking industry in the 1994 Nicholson Awards competition, which recognizes companies for putting together reports that the average Joe or Jane shareholder can understand.

This is no easy task, of course. After all, we're talking about banks here - have you ever tried to wade through one of those disclosure statements that show up in your mail every now and then?

First Union, parent of First Union National Bank of Virginia, relies on lots and lots of charts and graphs. For example, it uses seven graphs to reflect changes in such financial areas as the payment of its dividends back to 1978. Twenty additional charts and tables detail other financial data. First Union also was honored for its 1992 and 1991 reports.
