TECH POLICE CHARGE BLACKSBURG MAN WITH SODOMY

Virginia Tech Police have charged a Blacksburg man with forcible sodomy against a woman who walked across campus with him after the two met at a downtown bar.

Jeffrey Scott Bowab, 23, was charged Monday and released on a $3,000 bond, said Larry Hincker, university spokesman.

Police said the incident happened early last Friday morning near the War Memorial Chapel as the two walked across campus after drinking at a local bar.

Police said the two apparently had just met that night.

Hincker said the woman was allegedly forced to perform oral sex.

Even though neither Bowab nor the woman are Tech students, the incident must be reported to state and federal officials as a Tech offense because it happened on campus, Hincker said.

Hincker said he is concerned that incidents such as this will give the wrong impression of the safety of the Tech campus to prospective students and their parents.

"We're real concerned, as any university is, about our crime reputation," Hincker said.

The incident is "literally just a spillover from the town of Blacksburg," Hincker said.
