DELL CURRY hasn't forgotten.
The best man off the bench in the basketball business, Curry was the featured instructor at a basketball clinic at Radford High School.
Last season, Curry was the NBA Sixth Man of the Year.
Late last month, he was teaching about 70 local youths between the ages of 7 and 17 the finer points of basketball. The one-day camp was offered free of charge for players to sharpen their abilities and learn new skills.
The former Virginia Tech star also stressed the importance of staying in school and staying away from drugs.
The camp was sponsored by New Mount Olive United Methodist Church, where Curry is a member, as a way of giving back to the community.
``The enthusiasm and attitude was excellent,'' said the REV. LYLE E. MORTON, pastor of New Mount Olive Methodist. ``We expected a good response, but we were surprised by an even better response.''
Assisting Curry were college coaches, college assistants and other athletes, including STEVEN MYERS, HAPPY RUBEN, IVAN SNELL, BILL NICHOLS, HILLIARY SCOTT, SCOTT PIERCE, JIM BUNAK, PAGE MOIR and RICK HALL. Also, many local businesses donated food and drink and other supplies necessary to make the camp a success.
This is the second year Curry and the church have put on the clinic. In 1993, about 50 youths participated at the Pulaski YMCA. Curry closed the clinic by telling the basketball players that he would see them next year.
