Scout training

The Blue Ridge Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently held Wodd Badge Course SR 80, an eight-day advanced training course for adults who work with Scouts.

Participants from the Roanoke area were: Jimmie Brammer, Jack Peay Jr., Jeff Roudabush, Ronald White, Jon Collins, Ray Eades, Tommy Lovern, Michael Peay, Jeff Peay, Bill Thompson, Dave Smith and Reggie Wickham.

Staff members from the area were: Al Croy, Dick Hancock, Dan Horner, Pat Rhodes and Joe Roudabush.

Church still registering for child care program

Space still is available for First United Methodist Church's 1994-95 child care program scheduled to begin Sept. 1.

The program, for children 6 weeks to 5 years old, is open to both the church family and the community. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, from September to May.

The program was issued a state license effective in August.

Families are welcome to visit the church at 125 Main St. and Langhorne Place. Call the child care office at 389-5144 for additional information or registration forms.

Letter carrier group raising funds for MDA

Branch 524 of the National Association of Letter Carriers is holding two fund-raising events for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southwest Virginia.

Members will be placing cannisters along postal routes, and will participate in a "Bowl Against Dystrophy" bowl-a-thon.

Members will also be accepting donations at Valley View Mall and the Tanglewood Kroger store during August.

Money raised by the organization will be used to provide patient services to MDA families in Southwest Virginia.

Roanoke UVa alumni elect new officers

John A. Montgomery was recently elected president of the University of Virginia Alumni Club of the Roanoke Valley.

Other officers for 1994-94 are: Carole Agee, vice president; Karen Keister, secretary; and Frank Meade, treasurer.
