RUNNING, KICKING HIGHLIGHT HOKIES' 1ST SCRIMMAGE

The running of junior tailback Dwayne Thomas and a 58-yard field goal by transfer kicker Atle Larsen highlighted Virginia Tech's first scrimmage of preseason football practice Thursday.

Thomas had runs of 51 and 26 yards on the way to a total of 110 yards on seven carries. Larsen, a soccer-style kicker from Sola, Norway, is competing for Tech's kicking duties after transferring from Morehead State University.

Overall, Tech head coach Frank Beamer said he liked the Hokies' effort during the scrimmage, but said "we had too many penalties. I think the scrimmage showed us how much we have to accomplish before we open the season against Arkansas State.''

Senior quarterback Maurice Deshazo completed both of his passing attempts during the scrimmage, including a 70-yard touchdown to junior flanker Bryan Still. Sophomore fullback Brian Edmonds aided the offensive cause with a pair of short touchdown runs, while freshman tailback Ken Oxendine contributed a 13-yard touchdown sprint on the way to 69 yards on 13 carries.

Defensively, sophomore end Cornell Brown led the team with four tackles, a quarterback sack and another tackle behind the line.
