THE TIPOFF

C.J. Chenier is coming to Lime Kiln.

HOT TIME: C.J. Chenier will bring ringing zydeco music to Lime Kiln Arts near Lexington Sunday night at 8, and if the weather is nice and you're quick with your telephone, you may call up Sunday and get one of the 150 additional tickets that will go on sale at noon.

Chenier's father, Clifton, was the acknowledged King of Zydeco at his death in 1987. C.J. and his Red Hot Louisiana Band carry on the tradition, and mix in blues, New Orleans r&b and rock and roll, as well. That number to call on Sunday is 463-3074. Tickets are $14 and show time is 8 o'clock.

HEAVENLY: The emerald hills of Bath County will provide the soaring backdrop for the chamber music concerts Saturday afternoon at 4 and Sunday afternoon at 3 at Garth Newel Music Center near Warm Springs.

David Korevaar on piano and the Garth Newel Chamber Players will present works by Haydn, Chopin and Faure on Saturday. Works by Vivaldi, Marcello, Bloch, Vaughn Williams and Shostakovich will be featured on Sunday.

SPIRITS RISING: The Star City Gospel Music Workshop Association will enliven Crestar Plaza in downtown Roanoke today at 12:15 p.m. with a Brown Bag Arts performance that's free to one and all.

FLAT FEET: The sixth annual Vinton Old-Time Bluegrass Festival and Competition is under way in downtown Vinton. Shows continue tonight at 6 with performances from Inheritance and last year's winning bands, Plum Sideways and the Original Orchard Grass Band.

The festival competition will begin Saturday morning at 9 and conclude with the winners' concert, runnning till 11 p.m.

On Sunday, an outdoor church service and gospel bluegrass concerts will start at 11 and wind up at 6. The Lewis Family will headline it.

Throughout the event crafts, carnival rides and games will be offered.

JUST A FEW: The latest production at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke soon will head for the home stretch. ``A Few Good Men'' runs through Aug. 28 on the theater's Main Stage. Tickets are $12 to $18. Show times are Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday nights at 7:30, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2. Call 342-5740.

GLASSY EYES: The Roanoke Valley Collectable Glass Show and Sale will take place this evening from 5 to 9 and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.

ROLL OUT THE BARRELS: The Roanoke Valley Gun Show will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center coliseum and exhibit hall. Guns, knives and coins will be displayed and sold.

Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for senior citizens and $1 for students.
