The proposed center would be a joint project of Wythe County Community Hospital, Giles Memorial Hospital, Twin County Community Hospital in Galax and Radford Community Hospital.
About 40 people attended a public hearing this week on a proposed center at Wythe County Community Hospital. Nobody spoke against the idea, according to Southwest Virginia Health Systems Agency Executive Director Richard Roark, although representatives of Pulaski Community Hospital raised some questions about it.
Previously, Pulaski and Radford had been in competition for the center. The Health Systems Agency delayed any recommendation to give them time to try to come up with a joint proposal, but none could be worked out.
Now Radford is part of the group seeking a center to be located at Wytheville. However, both Radford's and Pulaski's applications for the center remain on file.
The Health Systems Agency is scheduled to consider the project at its next meeting Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Airport Holiday Inn in Roanoke.
Until a new center is built, cancer patients in the New River Valley and counties beyond will continue to drive to Roanoke, Salem, Richlands, Bristol or Winston-Salem for radiation therapy.
