MANY CHURCHES PLANNING HOMECOMINGS

It's HOMECOMING season, and several area churches have announced celebration plans:

New Hope United Methodist Church, New River: Sunday, 11 a.m., with Pastor Carol Dunsmore and guest soloist Karen Albers. Lunch follows at noon. Service Superintendent Fred Austin preaches at 3 p.m., with music by guest soloists.

Belmont Baptist Church, off Peppers Ferry Road (Virginia 114), about two miles from the Division of Motor Vehicles: Sunday. The Farley Brothers, James and Kenny, sing at 3 p.m. Pastor Tom Bond, 382-5335.

Abundant Life Fellowship (Pilot Pentecostal Holiness Church), 4491 Old Pike Road (off Pilot Road, Virginia 615): Sunday, celebrating its 18th year. Bob Neff offers song and testimony at 11 a.m., and lunch follows in the fellowship hall.

Camp Bethel United Methodist Church (formerly Camp Creek and Bethlehem churches), Floyd County: Sunday. Worship at 11 a.m. A potluck lunch and singing with the Heavenly Visions follow.

Mount Airy United Methodist Church, Riner: Sunday. Morning worship at 11 with the Rev. Lyle Morton. Lunch follows. The Rev. Lorenzo Hill and choir from Asbury United Methodist Church, Christiansburg, conduct the 2 p.m. service.

First Christian Church, 524 N. Jefferson Ave., Pulaski: Saturday, Aug. 27, 4 p.m., with picnic activities and games for all ages on the church lawn. A pit barbecue and covered-dish supper at Joe Morgan's begins at 6 p.m. A vesper service with the Rev. Dr. Jerry G. Whitt begins at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28. Sunday school is at 9:45 with the Rev. Coretha Gilmer Morra, guest speaker. A sandwich luncheon follows the morning worship service. 980-7144.

Blacksburg Pentecostal Holiness Church, Warren and Center streets: Aug. 28, with the Pilgrim Gospel Singers.

Glenwood United Methodist Church, Barren Springs: Aug. 28. Morning worship is at 11 with the Rev. Jim Goddard.

The Rev. Dr. J.N. Howard preaches during the annual UNITED METHODIST CAMP MEETING at the historic Page's Meetinghouse near Fairlawn. The camp meeting gets under way Sunday and continues through Wednesday. This marks the 11th yearly camp meeting in the current series, sponsored by United Methodist churches of the Radford, Floyd, Pulaski and Dublin areas. Sunday, dinner is served from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. for $3.

Howard, now senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Marion, is a former pastor of First United Methodist Church, Pulaski.

Page's Meetinghouse is the site of the first Methodist meetinghouse west of the New River, organized in 1773. It's west of Radford, about one mile off U.S. 11 on Hickman Cemetery Road.

Beth Green of Radford directs the music, which features area choirs each evening. A concert by the Pulaski-Dublin Children's Music Camp is Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Music starts at 6:45 the rest of the week. The Camp Meeting Quartet sings Monday, Melissa Gunter of Christiansburg appears Tuesday and Sheila Gallimore of Floyd sings Wednesday.

REVIVALS

A revival at Goodwins Ferry Church, Newport, concludes tonight. Service at 7:30. For more information, call Roy Vaught at 552-2343.

The Rev. James Dunn conducts revival services Aug. 28-31 at Grace Assembly of God, 2030 Redwood Drive, Christiansburg, sponsored by the Walton Pentecostal Holiness Church and Grace Assembly of God. Services Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and weeknights at 7.

HAPPENINGS

The Salvation Army, 525 Commerce St., Pulaski, holds Vacation Bible School, Monday through Sunday, 6-8 p.m., for ages 3 through teens. 980-2400.

Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 240 Watson Ave., holds a rummage sale today, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Hot dogs and baked goods are also on sale. Sponsored by the Christian Women's Fellowship.

Participants in the fourth annual music camp at First United Methodist Church in Pulaski present "Famous Kids of the Bible," Sunday at 11 a.m. at Dublin United Methodist Church, and Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church.

The children's summer educational program at New Life Foursquare Church, 900 Life Drive, Christiansburg, concludes with a presentation Sunday at 6 p.m. The summer program centered on the theme "Fruit of the Spirit." Pastor Sterling Brackett, 382-7100.

St. Francis Anglican Church, Wilson and Progress streets, Blacksburg, holds its annual yard sale today, 8 a.m.-noon.

The Christian Business and Professional Women's Council of the New River Valley holds a dinner meeting Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., at the Appalachian Building, downtown Pulaski. Meetings are nondenominational. The catered buffet is $6.95. Reservations accepted through Sunday by calling 980-6966, 980-0625 or 980-6558.

Fairlawn United Methodist Church, 7584 Brandon Road, holds a chicken barbecue dinner Aug. 27, 5-7:30 p.m. Adults $5; youngsters 10 and younger $3.50. Takeout orders available. Sponsored by the Fairlawn and Bethel United Methodist churches to benefit the parsonage fund.

JOYFUL NOISES

SHORT TAKES

Twenty-eight teen-age girls and eight leaders from several New River Valley Southern Baptist congregations recently attended the national Acteens Convention in Birmingham, Ala. Churches represented included Blacksburg Baptist, Cambria Baptist, Fairlawn Baptist, First Baptist Church of Narrows and Main Street Baptist Church, Christiansburg, all members of the Highlands Association in Southwest Virginia.

Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Prices Fork and Toms Creek roads, resumes its regular worship schedule Sunday, with services at 8:30 and 11 a.m.

Saint Jude Catholic Church, 1740 Tyler Road, just outside Radford city limits, starts its fall and winter schedule Sunday with Mass at 11 a.m. Mass continues Saturday evenings at 5:15 p.m.

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley, 1301 Gladewood Drive, Blacksburg, meets Sundays at 10:30 a.m. A discussion follows the service. 552-5273 or 552-4749.

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) meets Sundays for silent worship at the former Camp Creek Methodist Chapel, Virginia 615 in Floyd. Gathering at 10 a.m., worship at 10:30 a.m. There is a children's program. From Virginia 8, at the Court House go north on U.S. 221 for one mile, turn left on Virginia 615 and continue 5.1 miles.

New River Valley Church Hotline, a free telephone service, provides callers with schedules, special announcements, activities and devotions from Main Street Baptist, St. Paul United Methodist, and Christiansburg Mennonite Fellowship. 382-2046.
