David B. Geiman, 31, had eluded police for nearly a month before he cracked his head after falling on a wet bathroom floor in a Canadian courthouse, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson said.
Rescue workers were called to the scene.
After a police officer completed a criminal history check, it was discovered that Geiman was wanted in Roanoke County for attempted capital murder.
"It was really bizarre," the federal prosecutor said. "Watch where you run; the bad karma will catch up with you."
Geiman was arrested by federal authorities after he was deported by Canadian police for lying about his criminal history on entry papers into that country, Sorenson said.
A federal grand jury in Roanoke on Friday indicted Geiman on two counts of using his automobile as a deadly weapon.
Parkway Ranger R.L. Milliron narrowly escaped injury at the end of a 20-mile chase with a man thought to be Geiman on July16.
Milliron was driving north on the parkway in Roanoke County when he saw a car repeatedly swerve off the right side of the road.
When he turned on his blue lights, the car slowed, then took off down Rutrough Road.
The ranger followed the car along a series of back roads and through several red lights in southeast Roanoke County before he was finally able to block it on Old Virginia Spring Road.
But as Milliron stepped away from his car, the driver hit the accelerator and headed straight for him.
"I could feel his car brush by me as I moved towards my car," Milliron said a few days after the chase.
Roanoke County and city police joined the chase, which ended on Ventor Road when the fleeing driver stopped and ran into the woods near the parkway.
The driver dropped a bottle of prescription muscle relaxers, Milliron said.
Open containers of alcohol were found in his car.
Geiman faces 13 years in prison and a $500,000 fine if he is convicted on all the charges.
