JAIL-BREAKER RECAPTURED

A man who escaped from Catawba County Jail in North Carolina on Aug. 12 was caught Friday in Roanoke by deputy U.S. marshals.

Vincent Bernard Best, 29, was arrested initially when he did not appear in court to face federal drug charges.

According to U.S. Marshal George Sterling, Best fled the jail by making a phone call to a friend, who then called the jail. The friend said he was a marshal, that they arrested the wrong man and that Best should be released.

Best then rented a car, drove to the Roanoke Regional Airport and flew to Maryland.

Sterling said they arrested Best when he returned to Roanoke to pick up his rental car.

Best was being held at Roanoke City Jail and will face a federal judge on Monday.
