Volunteers are needed to clean up along the New River today, 9 a.m.-noon.
Starting points include McCoy Falls, at the New River Junction parking lot; Bluff City, under the U.S. 460 bridge near Wades; and Narrows at the IGA parking lot.
A picnic follows the cleanup.
The Keep Giles County Beautiful Committee, the National Committee for the New River and Partners for the New River are sponsoring the effort.

Wellness program
James Eden, author and psychiatrist of Blacksburg, will be featured on CNBC's "America's Talking, Alive and Wellness Program" today at 11 a.m. The program can also be viewed on satellite, G1-10.
Eden will discuss his current book, "Energetic Healing: The Merging of Ancient and Modern Medical Practices" and current concepts in quantum medicine.
NRCC gets grant
DUBLIN - New River Community College received a $192,478 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The grant will be used to continue activities under the Strengthening Institutions Program, a special program designed to help colleges make improvements in key areas such as instruction, curriculum development and student services.
Mark Rowh, director of the grant project, said that the federal funds would be used to support professional development activities and the colleges expansion of it's distance learning programs. This is the third year the college has received a grant from this program.
Track repairs
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing at Cambria Street will be closed for track maintenance and repairs Monday, Aug. 22, 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Hospice training
New River Valley Hospice Inc. is offering a series of training session for prospective volunteers.
Trained volunteers will go into a patient's home and offer companionship and respite for the terminally ill and their families.
Classes will be held at Heth Student Center, Radford University beginning Sept. 22 and will include such topics as:
"Introduction to Hospice" and Medicare-Medicaid Insurance Coverage."
"Attitudes on Death and Dying."
"Communications" and "Active Listening."
"Stress Management."
"Nutrition," "Pain Control" and "Body Mechanics."
"Funeral Arrangements."
"Grief, Loss and Bereavement."
"HIV, Hepatitis B and AIDS."
Registration is required by Friday, Sept. 16.

Ballroom dancing
BLACKSBURG - The United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association has announced formation of a Blacksburg area chapter, coordinated by Melanie Ondich of Pulaski. A get-acquainted dance party Monday, Aug. 22, 7 p.m., at Warm Hearth Village Activities Center, includes a dance lesson and social dancing.
Admission is $5 for members and $7 for non-members. Beginners are welcome.
The association is a non-profit, volunteer organization. The local chapter plans to sponsor monthly social dances for members and the public.
