NAMES & CHANGES

Thornton to direct child care

DONNA K. THORNTON, chief executive officer of Child Care Consultant Services based in Christiansburg, was recently appointed executive director of the National Association of Child Care Professionals. The association focuses on center and staff management, administration, insurance, finances and legal issues involving the child care industry.

Thornton succeeds Dora Fowler, the association's founder, who is retiring.

Thornton has been involved in child care issues since 1977. She is on the board of directors of the National Organization of Women Business Owners and is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Association of Child Care Consultants International.

HEALTH CARE

KEN REDICK has been selected by Saint Albans Psychiatric Hospital to be a counselor for its Roanoke office of Discovery, an outpatient program which meets in the evening to treat individuals and their families with alcohol and chemical dependency problems. Redick is both a certified substance abuse counselor and a certified addiction counselor. He was formerly director of Changes Clinic in Roanoke. Saint Albans is an affiliate of Roanoke-based Carilion Health System.

HOSPITALITY

DIANE O'CONNOR-ELDER has joined the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center as senior sales manager. She has nine years of experience in the hotel industry and has been director of marketing and sales at the Holiday Inn-Tanglewood in Roanoke, director of catering for the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel, and sales manager for the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest hotel. She will be based in Hotel Roanoke's temporary office at Franklin Plaza in downtown Roanoke.

LAW

THOMAS A. LEGGETTE, a principal in the law firm of Woods, Rogers & Hazlegrove in Roanoke, has been appointed chairman of the auto, land, air transportation and casualty insurance section of the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel. The federation is an international organization which helps to establish standards for providing competent, efficient and economical legal services. Leggette is a member of the Roanoke, Virginia and American Bar Associations, the Defense Research Institute, the National Association of Railroad Trail Counsel, and the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys.

MANUFACTURING

STEVE SHAUGHNESSY, formerly vice president of sales over national accounts at Singer Furniture Co. in Roanoke, has been named vice president of sales, Southern Division. Shaughnessy joined Singer in 1992 after being vice president and general manager for the Simmons Florida region. Singer recently announced the formation of two primary divisions - Manor House and Fashion Trend - and the corporate staff is being restructured to support these new divisions.

TOURISM

L. GERALD CARTER, general manager of Holiday Inn-Tanglewood, has been named president of the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau. Also elected were JAMES SEARS, executive director of Center in the Square, vice president; ROBERT ARCHER, general manager of Blue Ridge Beverage Co. Inc., secretary; and E.C. WARREN, owner and manager of The Roanoker Restaurant, treasurer.
