AGNEW STAYS IN FRONT FOR NRVS VICTORY

Jeff Agnew jumped out in front Saturday night and stayed there.

The result was a victory in the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature in the Dooley Printing/PSK Radio 300 at New River Valley Speedway.

"We didn't have the fastest car tonight, but we hung on," said Agnew of Floyd.

It was the 11th victory of the season for Agnew and his Chevrolet Lumina, leaving him one short of the track record set by Ronnie Thomas last season.

Starting from the outside of the front row, Agnew got a good start. He passed Thomas, who was the pole-sitter, at about the time the two reached the start-finish line.

Thomas contended that Agnew jumped the start and that track officials did not call it. But Agnew said he saw the green flag drop and started racing.

Thomas still had his chance. He pulled inside of Agnew on lap 72. After racing side-by-side for three laps, Thomas got loose coming out of turn 4 and had to back off the challenge.

"We got together, and I guess it heated up his tires too much," said Agnew.

Stacy Compton of Hurt passed Thomas a few laps after that and finished second in a Ford.

Christiansburg's Thomas ended up third in his Buick.

Tony McGuire of Roanoke was fourth in a Chevrolet, and Ray Young of Basset was fifth in a Pontiac.

In other races:

Rock Harris of Yadkinsville, N.C., moved in the lead on the second lap and stayed there for the rest of the caution-free 35-lap Limited Sportsman race. It was his ninth win of the season.

Junior Leagans was second, followed by points-leader Charlie Miles and John Curtis.

Davis Phillips of Plum Creek held off a late-race challenge to win the 25-lap Pure Stock race. Robbie Cundiff was second and Tony Rogers third. It was the fifth win for Phillips, who leads the division in points.

The 25-lap Mini Stock race was was not completed by press time.
