RADFORD CRUISES TO FCS LATE MODEL WIN

Ferrum's Bobby Radford won the 75-lap Late Model Stock Car feature race of the Unocal 300 at Franklin County Speedway on Saturday night.

Radford, driving a Chrysler, held off Ford drivers Rodney Cundiff and Frankie Pennington, who have combined to dominate the Late Model class at FCS since May.

The victory was the 65th of Radford's career and his fourth of the 1994 season.

Radford, who had raced only once at FCS since July 9, qualified on the pole with a time of 14.15 seconds. He led the entire race, opening what appeared to be an insurmountable advantage. A yellow flag on lap 73, however, closed the gap.

"I hated to see that caution with two laps to go," Radford said. "I knew those Fords would be tough. I guess we got lucky tonight."

Cundiff, who has 10 FCS wins to his credit in 1994, finished second. Pennington, who won four of the previous five races, placed third. Carl Dadian was fourth, and Harvey Harrison slipped past points leader Dudley Lawhorn late in the race to take fifth.

In other races Saturday night:

Mike Roberts, second in points, won the Rookie race and closed the gap on points leader James Hunt. Travis Sharpe was second and Stephanie Yates, who challenged for the lead early in the race, finished third.

After a restart, Jimmy Cox beat Steve Lam in a three-lap sprint to take the Mini Stock race. Lam, who finished second by half a car-length, had won nine consecutive races and 19 of 22 this season. Gary Joyce placed third.

The win was the second of the season for Cox, the only Mini Stock competitor other than Lam to win more than once this year.

Red Hartman was the Pure Stock winner. Mike Owens and Jay Peery, last week's winner, placed second and third, respectively.

The Street Stock competition turned into a marathon. There were two caution flags before the first lap was completed, and the race lasted nearly 30 minutes.

Mike Elkins outlasted the competition, winning for the second consecutive week. David Smith and Freddie Goff finished second and third, respectively.

Teddy Lawless again won the 10-lap Truck race.

Prior to Saturday night's race, drivers canvassed the stands for contributions for Street Stock driver Phillip VanDerVeer.

VanDerVeer, last year's Street Stock champion, was severely burned on the legs and abdomen last week during practice when a radiator hose burst.

The drivers raised $766 for VanDerVeer, who has been hospitalized since the accident.
