`Dessert & Concert'

WYTHEVILLE - Catherine Breske, who will sing at Wytheville's ``Dessert & Concert in the Park'' Thursday, has performed as a guest artist for several years at dinner concerts and theater arts productions in her home in Blacksburg.

She also has sung with the New Virginians, Virginia Tech Jazz Ensemble and Inaugural Entertainment Company, as well as on television and recordings.

Her late husband, Paul Breske, was co-founder and musical director for the New Virginians and musical director for the Miss Virginia Pageant. He wrote several one-woman shows in which she was featured.

The program at Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park will start with a chicken or ham biscuit meal at 6:30 p.m. and Breske's performance at 8 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance for $12.50 each by calling 228-8431, at Wordsprint's new location in the former Leggett building in Wytheville or from Family Resource Center board members. Proceeds benefit the center, which recently completed a new domestic violence shelter.

Loan pool created

WYTHEVILLE - Six Wytheville banks have created a $300,000 low-interest loan pool to help fund downtown improvement projects.

The project was put together by Downtown Wytheville Inc., an organization of merchants and citizens.

Loans can range from $2,000 to $10,000 (unsecured for three years) or $25,000 (secured for 10 years). The properties to be improved must be in the area bounded by Spring, Monroe, 11th and 12th streets and approved by Downtown Wytheville. The applicant will then be directed to one of the participating banks for loan processing.

The banks are Charter Federal, Premier, First Union, NationsBank, First Century and First Virginia.

Search begins Monday

WYTHEVILLE - Contractors are scheduled to start looking Monday for the source of gasoline contamination found in several Wytheville waterways this year.

They will use seismographic equipment to decide where to drill for the gasoline source, said Dan Manweiler of the Environmental Quality Department office in Abingdon.

A gasoline smell has been noted around the Wytheville Presbyterian Church, Wythe County Rescue Squad building and All-American Car Wash; and on North Fourth Street near the Wythe County jail. Manweiler said there may be two contamination sources for those two areas, or a single source connected by underground openings.
