A news release said Krichbaum broke ``the shaft of the fibula in his left leg,'' an injury UVa team doctor Frank McCue said usually takes six weeks to heal. That means Krichbaum, a fifth-year senior from Ridgefield, Conn., probably will miss at least three and possibly four games.
UVa did not make head coach George Welsh or his assistants available to comment on the impact of the injury to the 6-foot-6, 276-pound lineman, who was a third-team All-ACC choice last year after recording 74 tackles (12 for losses) and five sacks.
Todd White, a 6-1, 245-pound sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., was to back up Krichbaum and senior Ryan Kuehl. Behind White are two redshirt freshmen: 6-2, 250-pound Trevor Britton from Selinsgrove, Pa., and 6-3, 291-pound Julius Williams from Dayton, Ohio.
During Saturday's scrimmage, fullback Charles Way ran for two touchdowns and quarterback Mike Groh passed for two.
Way carried the ball 11 times for 92 yards and scored on runs of 11 and 56 yards. Groh completed seven of 15 passes for 114 yards.
Tiki Barber, a sophomore tailback from Roanoke, was the second-leading rusher during the scrimmage, carrying 21 times for 60 yards. Barber scored on a 3-yard run.
Anthony Poindexter of Forest, one of Virginia's top football recruits for this season, will be sidelined for at least two weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday.
The surgery, performed by McCue, was done ``to clean up'' some damaged cartilage in the knee. A UVa spokesman said Poindexter does not have ligament damage. The former Jefferson Forest High School star had been playing in the secondary in the Cavaliers' first two days of practice in pads.
In other sports in the region:
Tailback Thomas Haskins rushed for 87 yards on 12 carries to highlight the offense in VMI's first controlled scrimmage of preseason practice. Haskins scored touchdowns on runs of 3 and 2 yards. Jason Ross scored on a 10-yard run.
Quarterback Maurice DeShazo and split end Jermaine Holmes combined for three touchdowns in Virginia Tech's second preseason scrimmage. DeShazo threw scoring passes of 40, 19 and 7 yards to Holmes and a 62-yarder to Cornelius White. DeShazo connected on 14 of 19 passes for 296 yards.
On special teams, Bryan Still returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, and White scooped up a blocked field-goal attempt and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown.
Danny Edwards led all rushers with 104 yards on three carries.
Safety Antonio Banks was the leading tackler in the scrimmage, with six total stops.
Roanoke teams split decisions at the U.S. Tennis Association Sectional Championships in Virginia Beach. Roanoke's Net-Hackers 3.5 men's team defeated Washington 3-2 to stay undefeated, but the women's team lost 3-2 to Virginia No.1 from Shenandoah.
The men's team will face Virginia No.1, from Richmond, in today's round-robin play. The women's team got doubles victories from the No.1 team of Dezi Taylor and Bettina Altizer and the No.3 team of Edna Brubaker and Becky Dickerson, but singles losses by No.1 Jean Peck and No.2 Mary Mayrosh and by the No.2 doubles team of Betty Branch and Brenda Gretiotis proved costly.
