ROANOKE TEAM WINS IN TENNIS

Roanoke's Lingle men's 3.5 tennis team won the the USTA League Tennis Mid-Atlantic Sectional Championships on Sunday in Virginia Beach.

Lingle beat the Metcalfe team from Richmond 3-2 to advance to national competition of the adult recreational tennis league Sept. 22-25 in Palm Springs, Calif.

Winners for the Roanoke team included Randy Cargill at No. 1 singles and Steven Kanetzke and Earl Harrell at No. 1 doubles. The team of Raymond Lingle and Joseph Wheby won at No. 3 doubles.

Roanoke's Net-Hackers women's 3.5 team defeated Washington 4-1, but failed to win the championship because it had two losses.

The team got wins from Pam Leaberry at No. 1 singles and Dezi Taylor and Bettina Altizer at No. 1 doubles. Lee Bond-Sevingy and Betty Branch won at No. 2 doubles and Becky Dickerson and Edna Brubaker won at No. 3 doubles.

Jean Pack suffered the only loss at No. 2 singles. - Staff report
