BULLS KEEP BUCCANEERS IN CHECK, 6-2

Jamie Arnold, the Atlanta Braves' 1992 first-round draft pick, gave up a two-run homer to Salem Buccaneer Mitch House but didn't let another Buc cross the plate as the Durham Bulls downed Salem 6-2 Sunday night at Durham Athletic Park.

Arnold (7-7) allowed five hits, walked four and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. Reliever John Simmons gave up two hits, walked two and struck out two in 2 1/3 innings.

The victory left the Bulls with an eight-game lead in the Carolina League's second-half Southern Division race with 14 games to go. Durham's magic number is six to make the Mills Cup playoffs for the first time since 1989.

House gave Salem a 2-0 lead when he smacked the 3-2 pitch for a homer in the second inning.

Durham evened the score in the fifth when Damon Hollin hit a two-run double with one out.

Durham chased Salem's Matt Ruebel (4-6) in the sixth when shortstop Julio Trapaga smacked an RBI-triple and second baseman Marty Malloy followed with an RBI-double.

Ruebel gave up seven hits, five runs, walked six and struck out five in 5 1/3 innings. Bucs reliever Jose Sosa allowed two its, one run and struck out one in 2 2/3 innings.
