JUVENILE CRASHES CAR AFTER ESCAPE

One of two juveniles who escaped from the Shenandoah Valley Detention Home was recaptured Saturday, police said.

The youth was caught around 12:15 a.m. after he wrecked a stolen car in Staunton, police Sgt. Harold Coiner said. Coiner said the youth ran into another car at an intersection.

Two people in the other car were hospitalized in fair condition. Coiner said the youth was only slightly injured.

The remaining escapee, reportedly a 16-year-old boy from Charlottesville, still was missing, Coiner said.

The two were part of a well-organized ``major escape attempt'' Friday, according to Staunton Police Chief G.L. Wells.

The breakout by the seven juveniles occurred after several fights occurred within the facility.

Five were recaptured on the detention home grounds.

Three juveniles were injured, either during the breakout or by scaling the fence, Wells said.

Three detention home employees also were injured during the breakout and were treated at King's Daughters' Hospital, Wells said.
