COURTNEY, Opal Ernestine Tarter, 84, of Wytheville, died Monday, August 22, 1994 in the Wythe Co. Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Ralph Courtney of Wytheville; two sons, Donald M. Courtney of Wytheville, Dallas Courtney of Lenoir, N.C.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Gillman Funeral Chapel or at the residence, 745 North Third Street, at anytime. CRADY, Woodrow Wilson, Rev. 81, of Lowesville, Virginia, died Saturday, August 20, 1994, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Hazeltine Wright Crady. He was born in LaRue County, Kentucky, September 21, 1912. He was the son of the late John Warren and Addie Kestor Crady. He was a retired minister for 50 years. He served churches in Mill Creek in Botetourt County, Stuarts Draft in Augusta County, West Salem in Roanoke County and the Piney River area in Nelson County. He was also a director of Mission Piedmont Baptist Association. He was educated in Campbellsville College, Georgetown College in Kentucky, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a member of Piney River Baptist Church, a member and past Master of Masonic Lodge #84, In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Kirk and Jane Crady of Earlysville; two daughters, Karen Boley of Fairfax; and Kaye Crady of McLean; a grandson, Patrick Crady of Earlysville; two sisters, Mrs. Butler Smith and Mrs. Mary Horney, both of Louieville, Kentucky. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Piney River Baptist Church by the Rev. Carroll Welch, and the Rev. DICKENS, Metta Gardner, 93, of Fancy Gap, Va., passed away Sunday, August 21, 1994, at Twin County Community Hospital, Galax. Born December 17, 1900 in Carroll County, Va. the daughter of the late Stephen Gardner and Ruby Tipton Gardner. Mrs. Dickens is survived by one son and daughter, Joe and Evelyn Dickens, Fancy Gap; two daughters, Hazel Rowe, Johnson City, Tenn., and Elsie Hyde, El Cajon, Calif.; two sisters, Ruth McClure, Smithfield, Ohio; and Elizabeth Snider, McKeesport, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson. HAMILTON, James Manley, 65, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, August 21, 1994 in a Roanoke hospital. He was born on September 3, 1928 in Buena Vista, son of the late George and Bessie Dooley Hamilton. He was a member of the Stone Brethren Church. He was also a member of the I.W.O.F. #25, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Campbell Hamilton; a son and daughter-in-law, Marion James and Nancy Hamilton, Staunton; a son, Daniel Lee Hamilton, Buena Vista; two grandchildren, Jessica and Matthew Hamilton. HOLSTEIN, Marion V., 79, of Lexington, died Monday, August 22, 1994 at her residence. Mrs. Holstein was born June 7, 1915 in Amherst County, a daughter of the late Richard Ezra Smith and Hortense Henson Smith. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, the Honorable Paul Albert Holstein, retired judge of the Rockbridge County Circuit Court; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Donald LaTorre, Pendleton, S.C.; two sisters, Virgie Poole, Lynchburg, Pauline Bryan, Fairfax; two step-grandchildren; a special niece, Margaret Galindo, Lynchburg. KOHLER, Margarete, 84, of Blacksburg, died Monday, August 22, 1994 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Mrs. Kohler was born in Germany, on September 12, 1909, a daughter of the late Herman Arndt and Gertrude Mauke Arndt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Kohler. Survivors include a son, Werner Kohler, Blacksburg; a daughter, Linda Northrop, St. Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Christopher Northrop, St. Louis, Mo., Lawrence Kohler, Thomas Kohler, Elizabeth Kohler, Paul Kohler, Margaret Kohler and Catherine Kohler, of Blacksburg. LAMBERT, Giles Muncy, 71, of Radford, passed away Sunday, August 21, 1994 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Nancy Suiter and George W. Lambert of Tazewell County. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp., with most of his service in India. He was a graduate of Bluefield College, Lynchburg College, and Lexington Theological Seminary. He was a retired Pastor and served Boones Mill Christian Church in Franklin County, New Bethel, Gravel Hill, Chestnut Grove, and Craig Healing Springs Christian Churches, (Disciple of Christ) in his beloved Craig County. At the time of his retirement he was director of the New River Valley Juvenile Home, after serving as Superintendant of the Roanoke Juvenile Home & Lynchburg Juvenile Home. While in Roanoke he was an active member of the Lynchburg Alumni Assoc. He was active in the Woodmen of the World in Lynchburg and Radford, and was a Past National Representative. Survivors include his wife, Blanche Slade Lambert, Radford; son and daughter-in-law, Jack D. and Patricia Lambert; grandsons, Eric and Michael, all of Greensboro, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Walter (Billie Lou) Proffitt, Bluefield, W.Va., Mrs. J. B. (Sue) Heldreth Martinsville, Mrs. Mary Ellen Herrington, Waterford, Mich. A Christian Memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 24, 1994 at 7 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Radford with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. OKES, Carl Owen, 83, of Interlachen, Fla., a long time resident of Radford, passed away Friday, August 19, 1994 at his home in Interlachen, Fla. He was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Mr. Okes was a native of Ellison, W. Va., born on August 25, 1910, a son of the late William Lee Okes and Nancy Jane Hatcher Okes. ST. CLAIR, Kevin Wayne, 24, of Troutville, died Sunday, August 21, 1994. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines where he served at Guantanamo Bay and the Gulf War. He is surv ived by his mother and step father, Marion B. and Bobby Rosser, of Fredericksburg; his father and stepmother, Gary W. and Deborah St. Clair of Troutville; grandparents, Rufus J. and Glennie St. Clair of Troutville; three sisters, Melissa Ann St. Clair, of Roanoke; Torri M. STANGER, Rev. Allen B., 84, of Louisville, Kentucky, retired chaplain, associate professor of religious studies and director of ministerial training and recruitment at Lynchburg College, died Wednesday, August 19, 1994 in Louisville, Kentucky. Rev. Stanger was born in Blacksburg, Va. on September 15, 1909, a son of the late Robert Preston Stanger and Ida Bingham Stanger. He was a 1928 graduate of Blacksburg High School and was a Timothy of the Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Rev. Stanger attended Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn., for two years and was graduated from Lynchburg College in 1933. He then studied at Yale Divinity School, where he earned a B.D. in pastoral ministry, and at Hartford Seminary Foundation, where he earned an M. A. in higher education. In 1961, he was awarded a doctor of divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Ind., in recognition of his work as teacher, pastor and work with youth. Stanger and his wife, Nelle, touched the lives of thousands of students and friends during their 27 years at Lynchburg College, and in 1955, the College awarded him the T. Gibson Hobbs Alumni Award for distinguished service to humanity. He is survived by his wife, Nelle Gray Stanger, Louisville, Ky. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 24, 1994, at the Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Private burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. STEPHENSON, Dr. Robert L., 57, of the 4500 block of Gleneagle Drive, Virginia Beach, died Saturday, August 20, 1994, in Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was a Veterinarian. Dr. Stephenson was born in Smyth County, Va, and practiced veterinary medicine for 29 years in Kempsville. Survivors include his wife, Margaret C. Stephenson; a daughter, Mary Beth Stephenson, Blacksburg, Va.; a son, William David Stephenson, Virginia Beach; two sisters, Peggy Stephens on, Arlington, Va., Sandra Long, Norfolk; a brother, Roy S. Stephenson, Saltville, Va. Dr. Stephenson was a trustee at Providence Presbyterian Church. He was active in all fields of veterinary medicine and was selected the Veterinarian of the Year for 1991 for the State of Virginia. He was a former member of the Virginia Beach Rotary Club, and also served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce. The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 23, 1994 in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Robin E. Wooddell. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 24, 1994, in a Ridgedale Cemetery, Route 3, Saltville, Va. by the Rev. Jeffery Jones. Monday, August 22, 1994. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, or the College of Veterinary Medicine, Robert L.
