GILES KIDS HAVE UNTIL SEPT. 6 TO ENJOY SUMMER

Giles County public schools students will be the envy of the New River Valley as they revel in an extra week of summer fun.

Classes will start Sept. 6.

The elementary schools will hold open house for parents and students on Aug.31 from 5 to 7 p.m., with a special orientation for kindergarten and first-grade pupils from 6 to 7 p.m.

Eighth-grade orientation will be Sept.1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Head Start of New River Community Action and Community Education and Prevention Services will provide training for teachers and human-services personnel to implement the "I Can Problem Solve" program Friday at the Blacksburg Marriott.

Dr. Myrna Shure, the program's developer, and Phyllis Ditlow, the education coordinator for the pilot program in Philadelphia, will lead the training sessions.

The program teaches preschool, kindergarten and elementary school pupils to resolve and prevent interpersonal problems. The registration fee is $20.

Montgomery County public schools, Pulaski County schools and Radford schools will provide free and reduced-price meals for eligible students through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. Eligibility is based on household size and income.

The Christiansburg High School Athletic Foundation is offering several packages of general-admission tickets, reserved-seating tickets and parking passes for the 1994-95 football season for contributions ranging from $25 to $150.

The foundation will use the funds to buy lighting for outdoor sports facilities.

The Stanley Kaplan Educational Center in Blacksburg is offering Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation classes starting Sunday. The classes will meet Sunday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. through Oct. 6.

The Blacksburg High School forensic team fared well at the national championship tournament in Kansas City.

Dennis Price won first place in prose interpretation; Adam Jortner placed fifth in extemporaneous speaking. Michael Shumsky, Njambi Good and Bo Patrick also reached the later rounds of competition to complete the best record of any Virginia high school.

Meetings & More

The John Dalton Intermediate School will hold an open house for students on Thursday. Orientation for seventh-graders begins at 9 a.m. in their scheduled homeroom. The students may go through an abbreviated version of their schedule until 11 a.m.

Eighth-graders may pick up schedules from their homeroom teachers from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Christiansburg Middle School Parent-Teacher Association will hold its first meeting of the year Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

The Radford Athletic Boosters Club will discuss fund-raisers and the athletic department's needs for the coming school year tonight at 6:30 in the high school cafeteria.

The Christiansburg High School Athletic Booster Club will hold a pep rally for the 1994-95 fall sport athletic teams and coaches Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Christiansburg High School Athletic Complex.

The combined Blacksburg parent-teacher associations will hold a reception to welcome the new Montgomery County School Board members, Peggy Arrington and Richard Edwards, tonight at 7 in the Kipps Elementary cafeteria.

Come find out what kind of improvements need to be made at your child's school. The Montgomery County FACILITY USE AND SPACE STUDY, which studied problems ranging from overcrowded classrooms to faulty roofs, was presented to the School Board in July.

Results from that study are being spread to each community. The following meetings have been scheduled:

Bethel Elementary School: Aug. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the school.

Auburn High and Middle School: Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the school auditorium.

Blacksburg attendance zone: This includes all schools in the Blacksburg area. The meeting will be held at the middle school, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.

Christiansburg attendance zone: This includes all schools in Christiansburg. The meeting will be held Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at Falling Branch Elementary School.
