NEW RIVER PEOPLE

RUBY ALTIZER ROBERTS laureate poet and author of Christiansburg recently had her fifth book, "Look Down At The Stars," published.

The book is a firsthand account of her years of friendship with Walter Russell - who is said to be an extraordinary man of the twentieth century. Also included in the book are glimpses of legendary figures as Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Mark Twain.

Roberts has won many awards and honors. In 1950 she was chosen poet laureate of Virginia, and in 1993 she received the added laureate emeritus. She is a former newspaper correspondent and editor of a newspaper poetry column. She owned, edited, and published "The Lyric" which was the oldest traditional poetry magazine in North America for more than 25 years.

Three Blacksburg area scouts from Troop 152 receive Eagle Awards: AARON MULLINS son of Don and June Mullins. Mullins' eagle project involved making extensive improvements to a portion of the northwestern trail at Pandappas Pond, including placement of four large drainage culverts and excavation of several drainage ditches. He was assisted by fellow scouts from his troop and rangers of the Jefferson National Park. The U.S. Forest Service donated materials.

ERIK STEPHENS son of Joseph and Barbara Straub. Stephens' project involved building and setting up bluebird boxes at Caldwell Field in Montgomery County. He was assisted by fellow scouts in his troop, and materials were donated by the U.S. Forest Service.

BRIEN DAVIS son of Tom and Judy Davis. Davis completed his Eagle project by landscaping the Interior of the Blacksburg Aquatic Center. He was assisted by fellow scouts in his troop; a local business allowed the use of their C.A.D. system to make a layout of the facility for historical reference as well as for a presentation to the Recreation Department management.

Two staff members of the Mental Health Association of the New River Valley, SARAH STRALEY, Director of Public Relations, and AMY FORSYTH-STEPHENS, Executive Director, recently attended a four-day training institute in Atlanta. The highlight of the meeting was a reception and dinner at the Carter Center, with former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Carter addressed the group on her advocacy efforts with Betty Ford to insure parity between mental and physical health in the health care reform process now underway in Washington.

JEAN NELSON, Christiansburg artist, recently had a painting accepted in the 17th Annual Exhibition of the Southern Watercolor Society, which is being shown at The Parthenon in Nashville until Sept. 17. Nelson's work was one of 50 water-media paintings chosen from 429 slides submitted by artists from 16 states and the District Columbia. Nelson's work won her the Sax Arts and Crafts Award.

JAMES EDEN, author and psychiatrist of Blacksburg, was featured on a recent episode of CNBC's "America's Talking, Alive and Wellness Program" where he discussed his current book, "Energetic Healing: The Merging of Ancient and Modern Medical Practices" and current concepts in quantum medicine.

TINA VAUGHN has had her article "Junior Journal Editors" published in the August issue of "Learning94" magazine. Vaughn is a resident of Christiansburg and is a former Montgomery County Teacher.

BRIAN SPIESS, son of Sheilah R. Harrison, Shawsville, won second place for best editorial page design in the 1994 College Newspaper Design Contest. Spiess is a newspaper student at Ball State, Muncie, Ind.

ROBERT E. BOARD recently attended the 155th Annual Convention of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Marco Island, Fla. Board, of Christiansburg, is an officer of the University of Mississippi Chapter. The fraternity reaffirmed support for its international philanthropic project - the Children's Burn Awareness Program.

SALLY OSBORNE MACKIE has established the Mary Capps and Samuel N. Osborne scholarship at Illinois College. Mackie, a member of the class of 1950 at the college and a resident of Blacksburg, named the $50,000 endowed scholarship in memory of her parents who were also students at the college. The scholarship will be awarded in the fall of 1995 to an Illinois College junior majoring in art.

The August meeting of the SOUTHSIDE GARDEN CLUB was held at the home of Mrs. James Moore. Mrs. R.W. Hendricks presented a video program of Butchart Gardens, Victoria, British Columbia. Members receiving blue ribbons for horticulture were Mrs. Donald Bloss, Mrs. Hendricks, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Fred Morris, Mrs. L.E. Moseley, Mrs. Jack Muench and Mrs. R.L. Simpson. The members conducted a workshop at Showalter Center for residents of Warm Hearth.
