CITIZENS' Q&A

TODAY'S TOPIC: JOBS

What do the candidates plan to do about helping college graduates, such as myself, who graduate and then can't do anything with their degrees once they get them?

- Melvin Matthews, Jr., Roanoke

COLEMAN: "The answer to college graduates who can't find jobs is to expand the job base - to create more jobs. Congress can help or hurt. I intend to work for tax reform that will accomplish two goals: to reduce the tax burden on middle-income workers and to encourage job growth. What can damage our job base are more government controls and regulations that actually cost jobs in our economy, and I will lead the fight in Congress to keep the economy strong and create jobs."

NORTH: "I believe the best thing we can give a college graduate is a job - and we can only do so if we have an economic program free of government controls, which will create new jobs. I am concerned about the present programs which tax too much, spend too much, and regulate too much - which hurt college graduates because jobs in the private sector are destroyed, not created."

ROBB: "I have worked hard to promote economic development in Virginia for nearly two decades. As governor, we brought more than 400,000 new jobs to Virginia, and in the Senate I'm continuing to work to improve Virginia's economy and business climate by building a strong national economy, by promoting defense conversion to the civilian sector, and by keeping our defense installations in place and strong. I have placed particular emphasis on bringing the 'information superhighway' through the Commonwealth, which will bring additional high-tech jobs."

WILDER: "As Senator, I will work aggressively to create jobs for Virginians, just as I did as governor. Despite a national recession and unprecedented defense spending cuts, I was able to bring 50,000 new jobs to Virginia during my four-year term as governor. As Virginia's next U.S. Senator, I will fight to keep federal installations - civilian agencies as well as defense bases - in our Commonwealth, bring federal contract dollars to our state's businesses, promote international trading ties between Virginia and other nations, and serve as an economic development ombudsman to business looking to relocate or expand."
