POWER-LINE HEARING TONIGHT

Opponents of the proposed alternative routes for a 765,000-volt power line that pass through the New River Valley will meet at 7 tonight at White Gate Community Center in the southwest corner of Giles County.

The opponents will hear from officials with the U.S. Forest Service and Appalachian Power Co. The community center is on Virginia 42, about six miles west of Virginia 100 at Poplar Hill.

Appalachian Power wants to build a new power line from West Virginia to Cloverdale. Because several miles of its preferred route - which passes through Craig, Roanoke and Botetourt counties - cross the Jefferson National Forest, the Forest Service is conducting an environmental impact study. As part of that review, the Forest Service last month released a series of alternative routes; one of them passes the Dismal Creek area near the Giles-Bland county line. Others pass through Pulaski County and near Blacksburg in Montgomery County.
