Septemberfest

RADFORD - Septemberfest seeks the area's best chili cooks for its third annual chili championship. The cookoff is set for 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, in front of the Norwood Center in downtown Radford. This event is sanctioned by the International Chili Championship, and the winner is eligible for the annual Virginia chili championship.

Cookoff chairman Charlie Whitescarver is a three-time Virginia champion who has competed and judged at the World Championship Chili Cookoff. He manages the Norwood Center, which operates Hot Chilies Restaurant, the contest sponsor. Individuals, clubs or organizations interested in competing should contact Whitescarver at the Norwood Center, 1115 Norwood St., Radford, Va. 24141, call 633-2726, or fax him at 633-2729. Entry forms also are available at Hot Chilies Restaurant, The Gallery Cafe, Books and More and Encore! in the Norwood Center.

The entry fee is $25. Contestants must be members of the International Chili Society or have applied for membership. Whitescarver has applications.

Trophies go to the top five chilies, and the team that raises the most money for Big Brothers-Big Sisters of the New River Valley gets a special People's Choice award.
