TOWN'S ATTORNEY RESIGNS

Richard Kaufman, Blacksburg's town attorney for 11 years, has resigned to become the attorney for Herndon.

Kaufman announced his resignation, effective Sept. 30, on Monday. He will begin duties in Herndon on Oct. 3.

Kaufman has served as Blacksburg's lawyer since March 1983.

"I am looking forward to living and working in Herndon, Virginia, which, like Blacksburg is an attractive, progressive and well-governed community with many positive attributes," Kaufman said in a news release.

Kaufman helped draft the Blacksburg's noise and leash laws and parade and demonstration ordinances and mentioned them as among his proudest accomplishments.

"Herndon represents a good fit for me professionally and for my family and me personally and professionally," he said. Kaufman said Herndon's small-town environment - population 16,500 - and urban opportunities appealed to his family.

Blacksburg's town attorney is selected by and reports to the Town Council. Council is expected to consider acceptance of Kaufman's resignation at its Sept. 13 meeting.

Ron Secrist, town manager, said council will discuss Kaufman's resignation during an executive session after tonight's regular meeting. Secrist expects the town to begin recruiting for a new attorney immediately.

"There's always a special relationship between a town manager and town attorney," Secrist said. "I could not have imagined a better, more productive relationship. .. I will dearly miss him both professionally and personally. ... He is without a doubt the most productive, team-oriented local government attorney that I've ever been associated with," Secrist said.

Kaufman becomes the second town official this year to leave for a position in Herndon. In February, Mary Kemp, the town's finance director, left to take a similar position there.
