MOIR APPOINTS ASSISTANT COACH

Kevin Martin, who graduated this past spring after four years on the Roanoke College varsity basketball team, has been appointed assistant basketball coach for the Maroons, Roanoke College coach Page Moir announced Monday.

Martin, 22, started the past three seasons at guard for the Maroons, averaging double-figure scoring each year. He was a graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High School.

Head football coaches Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech and Dave Crist of Blacksburg High School will be the featured speakers at noon Wednesday at the ``Kickoff Luncheon'' of the Blacksburg Sports Club. Annual membership dues of $15 may be paid at the luncheon. Call 953-0388 for information.

Ray Harrell and Nick Varney fired 3-over-par 74s to share medalist honors and lead Glenvar to a 311-384 Pioneer District win over Parry McCluer in high school golf at Lexington Country Club. Tommy Lesperance added an 81 and Brian Kitts 82 for the Highlanders.

Cave Spring shot 315 to take the first-round lead in the five-round Roanoke Valley District golf tournament at Countryside. Patrick Henry is second at 318, with Franklin County (319), Pulaski County (330) and William Fleming (494) following. PH's Mark Baldwin had the day's low score, a 1-over 72.
