IT'S NO FUN TO BE HOMESICK - BUT THERE ARE REMEDIES

When students get homesick - and some students, though they may hate to admit it, do get homesick - Lisa Cacciapaglia, assistant director of residential programs at Virginia Tech, has a few suggestions.

We encourage new students to attend dorm meetings, "to get rules and regulations, but also to get to know the people who will be living with you," she said. Dormmates can help students find a sense of community and learn where their classes are.

The first night on campus, many dorms sponsor socials, volley ball games or movies. Participate!

There are a number of things students can do for their dorms, from becoming floor representatives to leading fundraising programs.

Above all, Cacciapaglia recommends getting involved in student organizations. Tech will host a Student Organizations Showcase on Saturday, Aug. 27, from noon to 4 p.m.

Still need someone to talk to? Go to your resident adviser, the counseling center or an academic adviser. There's always someone close by that will lend an ear.
