ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The consumer price index, the nation's chief measure of inflation, rose 0.3 percent in July and 2.8 percent during the prior 12 months.

The Department of Labor Statistics reported that the index stood at 148.4 points in July, compared to 148 in June and 144.4 a year ago. That means that a basket of goods and services that cost $144.40 last year cost $148.40 at the end of last month.

The index would have stood at 444.4 at the end of July if the government still used 1967 as the base of 100 points instead of the average for the years 1982-1984. Goods and services costing $100 in 1967 would have cost $444.40 at the end of july, an increase of 344 percent in 27 years.
