He and Pat Gooch, one of the owners of the new store, worked together in Charlotte, N.C., before Gooch and her husband, Michael Dowell, relocated to Virginia.
Gooch and Dowell plan to periodically have galleries of works by various arts and crafts people at their shop.
``The human spirit is tenacious and it is this tenacity that interests me as an artist,'' Gaylor said.
``Survival of the species seems to be a law of nature, at least to a point. Things that survive in the face of adverse circumstances and changing times seem to have commanded my respect and attention as an artist, and, most importantly, as a human being,'' he said.
He sees his work as ``a celebration of the people, places, plants and institutions that defy the inevitable and assert their rightful place on this fragile Earth for just a while longer through adaptation, metamorphosis, defiance and, above all, persistence of the human spirit and the grace of God.''
Gaylor grew up in the coastal Wilmington, N.C., area. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and holds a master's degree from East Carolina University.
He taught painting, drawing and design at Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College. His works have been acquired for a number of permanent collections.
He has designs featured in publications including ``The Wreath Book,'' ``Decorating Baskets,'' ``The Decoupage Book'' and ``Christmas Naturals.''
