CITIZENS' Q&A

What will the candidates do to stick up for us honest gun-owners of America? It seems like Sarah Brady and a bunch of them are trying to take guns away from us and I'd like to know what the candidates are going to do to help us honest gun-owners keep our guns.

-C.B. Kipps, Blacksburg

COLEMAN: "Americans have a constitutionally-protected right to keep and bears arms - a right that I strongly support. The Brady law does not apply to Virginia because state law already provides instanteous record checks to help keep guns out of the hands of criminals. I believe the Virginia law is working well. Beyond that, we should focus our efforts on disarming the criminals and punishing those who would use guns to commit a crime."

NORTH: "I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and oppose those groups who are trying to confiscate or limit the gun-ownership of law-abiding citizens. Unfortunately, some people confuse gun control as crime control. It is not. I will fight for Second Amendment rights in the U.S. Senate."

ROBB: "I support the right of all Americans to keep and bear arms. The Brady Bill simply requires a background check before the purchase of a handgun. The Brady Bill does not affect Virginia, since our state already has an instant background check. The Brady Bill was requested by police officers across the nation, and will help law enforcement officers in other states keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals. The Brady Bill does not provide for confiscation of weapons."

WILDER: "As a gun-owner myself, I believe all law-abiding citizens should be allowed to purcahse and keep firearms, be they for hunting, collection, self-protection or other legitimate purposes. However, in order to keep guns out of the hands of convicted felons, I sought passage of Virginia's instantaneous electronic background check, which also included a three-day waiting period of out-of-state purchasers. I also authored the one-gun-per-month handgun purchase limit law that passed the 1993 General Assembly, which has significantly curbed gun as well as drug trafficking in our Commonwealth."
