Moore, from Martinsville, took the spot on the depth chart previously filled by ex-Virginia Tech quarterback Will Furrer, whose career at Virginia Tech coincided with Moore's.
The Cardinals also cut rookie free agent Bernard Basham, a defensive lineman from Virginia Tech and Patrick Henry High School. Basham was waived last week by New England, which also dropped former UVa players Don Reynolds from Laurel Park High School and Jerrod Washington.
Moore, selected by Denver in the 10th round of the 1991 National Football League draft, spent three years with the Broncos but did not start a game. In his most active season, he played in three games in 1992 and completed 17 of 34 passes for 232 yards and no touchdowns.
Moore, the ACC player of the year in 1990, was behind John Elway and Tommy Maddox for the last two seasons and became expendable this year when the Broncos picked up veteran Hugh Millen.
Moore, who passed for more than 6,000 yards at Virginia, told The Rocky Mountain News that he believed his release was financially motivated in the first year for a salary cap in the NFL. His contract called for a base salary of $273,000 (slightly more than $300,000 after bonuses), while Millen had agreed to the minimum of $162,000.
