POLICE ARREST 2ND SUSPECT IN ROBBERIES

Police have arrested a second man in connection with a string of convenience-store robberies in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem.

John Edward Kirk, 33, of the 5200 block of Victoria Street Northwest, was arrested Monday night at his home.

Police said they were looking for Kirk and had matched his name with a blue pickup truck that resembled one witnesses saw driving from the crime scenes. The vehicle was parked outside Kirk's Roanoke home.

Kirk was charged in the robbery of the Happy Store in the 2100 block of Apperson Drive in Salem on Thursday night and the Market Place on Plantation Road in Roanoke County on Friday morning.

A charge stemming from a third robbery, which occurred at the Uni-Mart in the 1200 block of Jamison Avenue on Friday morning, will be brought before a Roanoke grand jury, said Roanoke police Sgt. A.S. Smith.

On Saturday, police arrested Ronald Roop, 31, of the 3800 block of Panorama Avenue Northwest and charged him in the three robberies. He remains in Roanoke County Jail on $3,000 bond.

According to a county sheriff's deputy, Kirk has been released from Roanoke County Jail.
