Mattox, 44, had been a deputy U.S. marshal. He's worked in the Roanoke U.S. Marshals Service office for 22 years and has held every position in the organization.
"This has been a career goal of mine," he said moments after being sworn into office by U.S. District Judge Jackson Kiser.
Mattox, nominated for the federal post in February by Sen. Charles Robb, said his appointment was confirmed by Congress and signed by the President last week, but that he didn't find out until Monday.
The U.S. marshal and U.S attorney are the only federal political appointments in the western half of the state.
Mattox replaced John Metzger, now head of the state Parole Board.
"I plan to run a very cost-efficient operation," said the Roanoke native.
The primary responsibility of the 18-person marshal's office is federal court security, but the officers also serve warrants and track fugitives.
