GRADUATING CLASSES TO START GETTING BIGGER

Americans will spend $506 billion on education in the next school year. That will average $5,900 for each child in public school, $14,400 for those in state colleges and $25,700 for those in private schools.

In its annual back-to-school forecast Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Education also said spring will see a significant rise in high school graduates, the vanguard of larger graduating classes expected through 2000.

High school enrollment is expected to climb from 13.2 million in the last school year to more than 13.6 million in the next. There will be a 5 percent rise in high school graduates, to 2.6 million.

Nearly 14.7 million students, a record, are expected to enroll in colleges and universities; the number earning associate, bachelor's and master's degrees also will be a record.

Teacher salaries, which averaged $35,958 last year, will be $37,200 next year.
