Yokohama, union return to table

Representatives from the United Rubber Workers union and Yokohama Tire Corp. resumed contract talks Tuesday in an effort to settle a contract dispute that has had union members on the picket line for 31 days.

Talks were held in private at the Roanoke Airport Marriott hotel and were expected to continue at least through this week unless a settlement is reached earlier.

The two sides last met on Aug. 11, which was their first meeting since the union's contract with Yokohama expired at midnight July 23.

The major issue - but not the only issue - keeping the two sides apart is a proposal by the company that more union members become eligible for weekend work.

Richard Switzer, Yokohama's vice president of manufacturing, had no comment on the progress of negotiations Tuesday and would only confirm that the two sides were meeting. Union representatives involved in the talks could not be reached for comment.

Rose's Stores names president

HENDERSON, N.C. - Edward Anderson, vice president of finance for Rose's Stores Inc., has been named president and chief executive officer, the company announced Tuesday.

Anderson succeeds George Jones, who resigned last week.

His appointment was made at a meeting of the board after consultation with representatives in the company's Chapter 11 proceedings.

The board also elected Anderson as chairman of the board, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Lucius Harvin III.

Anderson, 44, joined Rose's in 1978 as controller. He was made senior vice president and chief financial officer in 1990 and promoted to executive vice president in 1992.
