EARNINGS

WLR Foods Inc., Broadway-based turkey processor and parent of Cassco Ice & Cold Storage in Roanoke, reported net earnings of $16.6 million, or $1.51 a share, for its fiscal year ended July 2. That compares with net income of $14.6 million, or $1.40 a share, a year earlier. Sales rose to $727.3 million from year-earlier $616.7 million. For its fourth quarter, WLR reported net earnings of $7.3 million, or 67 cents per share, compared with $6.1 million, or 56 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales were $194.8 million, up from $179.8 million.

S&K Famous Brands

S&K Famous Brands Inc., Richmond menswear retailer with stores in Western Virginia, reported net income of $276,800, or 6 cents per share, in its second quarter ended July 30, down from $766,000, or 16 cents, a year earlier. Sales were $24.8 million, up from year-earlier $21.2 million. For the first half of its fiscal year, S&K reported net income of $758,800, or 16 cents per share, down from $1.5 million, or 32 cents per share. Sales for the half were $49.5 million, up from $42.2 million.

Hoechst Celanese

Hoechst Celanese Corp., Somerville, N.J., operator of a cigarette-filter fibers plant at Narrows, reported net income of $56 million for its second quarter ended June 30, up from $46 million a year earlier. Sales were $1.98 billion, compared with year-earlier $1.67 billion. For the first six months, net income rose to $68 million from $22 million a year earlier. Sales totaled $3.59 billion, compared with $3.14 billion. Hoechst Celanese, a subsidiary of Hoechst AG of Germany, does not report earnings per share of stock.
