RIG OVERTURNS; DRIVER INJURED

A Georgia truck driver who police said apparently fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 81 was injured Wednesday afternoon when his rig struck a guardrail and overturned.

State Trooper A.C. Henderson noticed the tractor-trailer weaving near Christiansburg and followed it nearly four miles, flashing his lights.

The truck struck guardrails several times, and the driver did not stop for the trooper.

The truck, driven by Lowrin Henry Barrow, 52, of Stapleton, Ga., overturned after tearing through 470 feet of guardrail near the southbound Radford rest area, Henderson said.

It took rescue workers about 20 minutes to free Barrow from the cab of the truck, which landed on its side over an embankment.

Barrow was taken to Radford Community Hospital by the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, where he remained in stable condition Wednesday night.
