LEAHY LEADS STATE SENIOR AM QUALIFYING

John F. Leahy III of Alexandria posted a 2-under-par 70 Wednesday to pace the first round of qualifying for the 43rd annual VSGA State Senior Amateur championship in Hot Springs.

Leahy matched par-36 on the front nine and had seven pars and two birdies on the back at the Lower Cascades to take a one-shot lead on 1993 qualifying medalist Frank Summers Jr. of Staunton.

Qualifying is being held on The Homestead's Lower Cascades and Cascades courses. All of the low rounds Wednesday came on the Lower Cascades. Golfers will switch courses for today's second round of qualifying.

Manny Hunter of Suffolk and James Kite of Wolftown each shot 72.

The sizable Southwest Virginia contingent was paced by 1960 State Amateur champion Ned Baber of Roanoke and Virginia Tech baseball coach Chuck Hartman, who each shot 73. Other top Roanoke-area scorers were Dan Keffer (74); Gibby Wingfield (74); Don Ragland (75); Bill Shrader (76); Don Foster (77), Arman Fletcher (78), Blair Nicely (78), Billy Deemer (78) and Clete Lawler Jr. (78).

The 31 low scores following today's second round of qualifying join defending champion Jim Alexander of Lynchburg for two rounds of match play Friday. Two additional match-play rounds Saturday will cut the field to two, who meet in an 18-hole championship round Sunday.

In other sports in the region:

Hunting Hills Country Club teaching pro Chip Sullivan shot rounds of 73, 71, 72 for a 216 total to finish eighth in the Mid-Atlantic PGA Section Championship at Governors' Land at Two Rivers Country Club in Williamsburg. The top eight from the section competition qualify for the national championship in October.

Bedford Post 54 opens play Friday in the first round of the 69th annual American Legion baseball World Series in Boyertown, Pa.

Bedford (34-2) is making its first trip to the World Series. Post 54 plays Salem, Ore., in its first-round game Friday night.

Other teams in the field are Russellville, Ark.; Blissfield, Mich.; Brooklawn, N.J.; Miami, Fla.; Omaha, Neb.; and Chino, Calif.

These regional championship teams are the final eight of the 4,522 American Legion teams that began play in June. The double-elimination tournament features players ages 15-18.

The championship game, Tuesday, Aug.30, will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis Sept.1 at 1 p.m. on ESPN.

Defensive back Maurice Glenn and running back Uly Scott of Richmond have been named to the 1994 NCAA Division 1-AA preseason All-America football team by the Don Hansen Football Gazette.

Glenn led the Spiders in tackles last season with 130 and had five pass interceptions. Scott rushed for 1,025 yards on 235 carries in 1993. He is 512 yards shy of becoming Richmond's all-time leading rusher.

Richmond opens the 1994 season on Sept.3 with a 1:30 game at VMI.

The 1994 National Softball Association men's class C fast pitch World Series will be Friday through Sunday at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.

Forty-one teams from 12 states will participate in the tournament.

Great Lakes from Cheboygan, Mich.; and Federal Lock from Arlington.
